Is there a better legacy to leave than the gift of education?

J. Holt Rose, M.D., who died in March 2018, believed the gift of education is one of an individual’s most important and rewarding legacies. He was the son of Joseph and Helen Johnstone Rose. Helen served on the Westridge board of trustees for 21 years, including a term as president, and was a founding member of the Madeline Society. In 1993 she was named trustee emeriti.

Holt and his sisters Cathy Rose ’53 and Peggy Rose Badger ’57 saw their mother fulfill board responsibilities diligently, working to secure the highest traditions of the school.

Helen herself attended the Masters School, a girls school in Dobbs Ferry, New York. She applied the motto of that school—“Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might”—to all her endeavors in life.

Helen and Joseph Rose established the Helen and Joseph H. Rose Family Scholarship Fund in 1980. Thanks to the continued support of Cathy, Peggy, Holt, and Holt’s wife, Halaine, the fund has now grown and will support Westridge girls for years to come.

The recent bequest by Helen was in keeping with 25 years of gifts made by Holt and Halaine to the scholarship fund. Their aim in life, and Holt’s bequest, has been to honor Helen Rose and her passion for Westridge as a center of educational excellence.
